A Meeting of Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with the Experts of the Venice Commission Held

On Thursday, April 20, an online meeting of the Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Serhiy Holovaty, with the rapporteurs and experts of the European Commission For Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Regina Kiener (Switzerland), Jan Velaers (Belgium), Deputy Secretary of the Venice Commission Schnutz Dürr, as well as the Head of the Division of Elections and Political Parties of the Secretariat of the Venice Commission Pierre Garrone.

The meeting took place in the context of the Venice Commission's preparation of an opinion at the request of the Chairman of the PACE Monitoring Committee dated January 30, 2023 regarding the Law of Ukraine “On National Minorities (Communities) of Ukraine” adopted on December 13, 2022. The draft opinion is planned to be submitted for approval at the 135th plenary session of the Commission, on June 9-10, 2023.

The Ukrainian side invited the rapporteurs and experts of the Venice Commission to visit Ukraine and meet with the interested parties in order to better understand the situation regarding ensuring the rights of national minorities (communities) and indigenous peoples.

The parties thanked each other for constructive communication and noted the importance of maintaining a constant dialogue for the exchange of views.
