Ukrainian-Belgian Dialogue in the Field of Constitutional Justice: Meeting with Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium Held

On 8 September 2026, Oleksandr Petryshyn, Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, and Judges of the Court Viktor Gorodovenko, Petro Filiuk, Oleksandr Vodiannikov and Galyna Yurovska held a meeting with Luc Jacobs, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to Ukraine at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. Lorenz Herpoel, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Ukraine, also attended the meeting.

Welcoming the participants, Oleksandr Petryshyn, Acting Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, emphasised the importance of deepening Ukrainian-Belgian cooperation in the field of constitutional justice, the protection of human rights and freedoms, and the promotion of rule of law, as well as in the context of Ukraine’s European integration. He noted that Belgium’s experience in the functioning of constitutional justice within complex state, legal and social framework is of exceptional value to Ukraine.

Oleksandr Petryshyn expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom of Belgium for its support to Ukraine amid full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation. He noted that, although the war has posed unprecedented challenges for Ukraine, it has strengthened Ukraine’s commitment to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and reinforce democratic institutions.

During the meeting, the Judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine informed the guests on the functioning of the constitutional complaint mechanism, the requirements for constitutional complaints, and the procedure for their consideration by the Court. The participants also discussed measures to enhance public trust in the constitutional review body, in particular by increasing the transparency of its activities and conducting legal awareness-raising initiatives and lectures.

Luc Jacobs, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium in Ukraine, emphasised the important role of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in ensuring the stability of the constitutional order. He highlighted the particular importance of the Court’s work in the face of contemporary challenges and in the context of Ukraine’s European integration. The Ambassador stressed the importance of further cooperation, confirmed readiness for constructive partnership, and expressed Belgium’s unwavering support for Ukraine.

The meeting marked a continuation of the professional Ukrainian-Belgian dialogue. The parties reaffirmed their readiness for further cooperation aimed at upholding the rule of law and supporting Ukraine’s progress towards European integration.
