Representatives of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Took Part in the Event on the Occasion of the International Human Rights Day

Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Kychun, former Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Mykhailo Kostytskyi and Head of the Secretariat of the Court Viktor Beschastnyi participated in the scientific and practical round table “Human Rights Protection in Ukraine: Current Status and Prospects for Improvement” dedicated to the 73rd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclamation. The purpose of the event was to discuss current human rights challenges in Ukraine.

In his welcoming speech, the judge of the Court Viktor Kychun noted that the round table took place just when the International Human Rights Day was celebrated all over the world. According to him, it is no coincidence that its co-organiSer is Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytsky University of Management and Law, named after a prominent Ukrainian jurist, doctor of law, first Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

Analysing the protection of human rights in Ukraine, Viktor Kychun pointed out that our state is part of a democratic world where the rule of law, respect for human rights and democracy prevail. Everyone in our country is guaranteed access to justice.

In this context, the judge informed that the majority of appeals lodged at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine concern the protection of social rights. Equally important is ensuring the political rights of citizens to participate in the socio-political life of the state and the exercise of state power. According to Viktor Kychun, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine has delivered many decisions that have protected the political rights of citizens, including suffrage, the right to peaceful assembly, and so on.

Finally, the judge of the Court noted that everyone in their place should contribute to the development and improvement of mechanisms for the protection of human rights and freedoms in Ukraine.

Former judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Mykhailo Kostytskyi also delivered a report, revealing the relationship between human and citizen’s rights and duties and explaining that every right corresponds to a duty.

Former Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Volodymyr Kampo presented the report “Leonid Yuzkov and the formation of local self-government in Ukraine.”

The Head of the Secretariat of the Court Viktor Beschastnyi told the participants about the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on protection of individual rights in criminal proceedings.

During the round table, leading scientists, government officials, experts and practitioners discussed a number of other issues related to the protection of human rights in the COVID-19 pandemic, mechanisms for exercising the right of citizens to judicial protection and free legal aid. Some aspects of protection of the rights of socially vulnerable categories of citizens were also analysed.
