A meeting with the Ambassador of the European Union took place at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine

 

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Tupytskyi and the Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Serhiy Holovaty held a working meeting with the Ambassador of the European Union, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas and Political Officer of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Dmytro Horchakov.

During the meeting Oleksandr Tupytskyi informed the guests about the activities of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, its role in the process of amending the Constitution of Ukraine, including the procedure for considering draft laws submitted to the Court. The Chairman of the Court stressed that, according to the Constitution of Ukraine, the Constitutional Court is an independent body that is equally distant from all branches of power. "We stand for the supremacy of the Constitution in the state, and amendments thereto will be in force for decades and will have impact on the lives of all citizens."

In addition, the importance of interaction between the bodies of state power for the development of a democratic and law-based state was emphasised during the meeting. The parties also discussed the feasibility of applying expert opinions of reputable international bodies, in particular the Venice Commission, at the stage of introducing amendments to the current legislation. Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Serhiy Holovaty also participated in the discussion of these issues.

The Ambassador of the European Union, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas thanked for the meeting and the information provided. The Ambassador noted that the European Union welcomed the undergoing reforms in Ukraine, and the parties assured of their readiness for further cooperation.
