Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Ihor Slidenko:
"New competence of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine: new opportunities - new challenges"
On September 20-23 in Gdansk, the XXth International Congress on European and Comparative Constitutional Law "Development of constitutional law through constitutional justice: significant decisions and their influence on the constitutional culture" was held.
The Congress on European and Comparative Constitutional Law, organised by the University of Gdańsk together with the University of Regensburg, brought together participants from over 22 countries. Scholars and representatives of the constitutional courts of Albania, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Kosovo, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, and other countries participated in the event.
The Congress was opened by Vide-Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Gdansk Professor Piotr Uziębło. He emphasised the relevance of the event and wished the participants fruitful work.
Vice-rector of the University of Gdańsk Anna Machnikowska and President of Gdansk Paweł Adamowicz welcomed the guests. Professor at the University of Regensburg Rainer Arnold made an introductory presentation on "Evolution of Constitutional Law: An Example of Germany".
Within the framework of the Congress, judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Ihor Slidenko presented a report on "New competence of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine: new opportunities – new challenges". He outlined the main novels of the Law of Ukraine "On the Constitutional Court of Ukraine", which was adopted after the introduction of amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine in the area of justice. In addition, the judge informed the participants of Congress about the challenges faced by the constitutional control body of Ukraine in the context of its reform, and dwelt in detail on the introduction of the institute of constitutional complaint as an effective mechanism for the protection of human rights.
The work of the XXth International Congress was held in the form of sectional meetings, during which the participants had an opportunity to discuss the actual issues of constitutional justice.
