Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin and judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk participated in the solemn hearing of the European Court of Human Rights on the occasion of the opening of the judicial year

 

Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin and judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk participated in the seminar "Non-refoulement as a principle of international law and the role of the judiciary in its implementation" and a solemn hearing of the European Court of Human Rights on the occasion of the opening of the judicial year, held on January 27, 2017 in Strasbourg.

The President and judges of the European Court of Human Rights, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, President of the National Asylum Tribunal (France), President of the International Criminal Court, judges of the constitutional and supreme courts of the European countries as well as the  representatives of academic institutions took part in the event.

At the beginning of the seminarб the President of the European Court of Human Rights Guido Raimondi and judge of the ECHR in respect of Ukraine Ganna Yudkivska welcomed the participants.

The programme included sessions on the following topics: "Non-refoulement as a principle of international law and the role of the judiciary in its implementation", "Current migration problems: lessons learned" and the workshops: "Assessment of the credibility of asylum-seekers: the burden of proof and the limits of the ECHR's examination", "Reception of migrants: material and procedural guarantees for settled migrants".

Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin and judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk held a meeting with Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Ukraine, Head of Department of the European Social Charter of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe Regis Brillat.

During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation between the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the Council of Europe, including the activities within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine for the coming years as well as the protection of citizens' social rights. The parties agreed on the expert assistance to Ukraine in this matter and expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation.
