Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk visited the Republic of Lithuania

 

On March 26, 2018 Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk visited the Republic of Lithuania and participated in events related to the discussion of cooperation between the constitutional courts of Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania and within the framework of the Association of Constitutional Justice of the Countries of the Baltic and Black Sea Regions.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss further cooperation between the constitutional courts of Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania, in particular, with regard to the support of the reform of the Ukrainian legal system, including the reform of the constitutional control body in the context of European integration.

Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk met with the President and the Judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania. Stanislav Shevchuk thanked his colleagues for many years of support of the Ukrainian state and the constitutional jurisdiction and noted that it is extremely important and necessary in this difficult period for our country. "There should be an independent, effective Constitutional Court open to the public, which adopts decisions and protects human and citizens’ constitutional rights ", noted the Chairman.

President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania Dainius Žalimas emphasised the warm and friendly relations between the constitutional courts of Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania, as evidenced by the first international visit of Stanislav Shevchuk in the status of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine to the Republic of Lithuania. The experience of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine may be valuable in the context of the constitutional complaint institute, the introduction of which is a possible prospect for the Republic of Lithuania.

Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk held a number of working meetings, in particular, with the Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktoras Pranckietis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius, Chairman of the Union of Lithuanian Tatars Adas Jakubauskas, Rector at Mykolas Romeris University Algirdas Monkevičius.

Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktoras Pranckietis congratulated Stanislav Shevchuk on his election as Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and expressed his support for the reform of the legal system in Ukraine. He emphasised the positive developments in the activities of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, in particular, the adoption of procedural acts and a number of important decisions. In addition, the interlocutors discussed the initiative of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on changes to the text of the Preamble of the Constitution of Ukraine regarding the geopolitical European and Euro-Atlantic orientation of our country.

The initiative of the President of Ukraine was also widely discussed during the meeting of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk with the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Darius Skusevičius and was positively welcomed by the Lithuanian side.

Furthermore, a meeting was held with Pastor Priest of St. Josaphat Cathedral Vincent with the participation of Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Lithuania Volodymyr Yatsenkivskyi.
