Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk met with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli

 

On March 21, 2018 Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk met with Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli.

The meeting was also attended by Head of Political Section of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Fabio Della Piazza, Project manager of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Andrii Spivak and the management of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the urgent issues of cooperation between the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the European Union Delegation to Ukraine, in particular, in the area of ​​expert-analytical and information support of the Court.

 Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Stanislav Shevchuk informed the guests about the latest changes that took place in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. Recently the Court adopted the Rules of Procedure - a procedural document defining the organisation of its internal work and the relevant rules of procedure for review of its cases, including constitutional complaints, noted the Chairman. "Also, in the near future, there will be established senates and collegia",  added the speaker.

Stanislav Shevchuk noted that his priority as the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is the European direction, because, in his opinion, it is important to adopt the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with account of the European values, which are also contained in our Constitution.

Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine spoke about the introduction of constitutional complaint in Ukraine. "From now on, a person may directly apply to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine if he or she considers that his or her constitutional right has been violated", continued the speaker. He added that 572 constitutional complaints have already been submitted to the Court, 131 of which have been distributed among judges.

The Court’s Chairman stressed the need to restore people's confidence in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and its decisions. "We are judges, we understand our responsibility to the people", stated Stanislav Shevchuk.

Head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli congratulated Stanislav Shevchuk on his election as Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and wished success in the implementation of the responsible mission that faces him. The Ambassador noted that modernisation of the country is not always easy, the process of reforming is difficult and lengthy. "However, it is important to confidently go the European way that your country has chosen," said Hugues Mingarelli.

The interlocutors thanked each other for an informative meeting, expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation and agreed on the implementation of joint measures aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
