Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine held a Meeting with OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Head of Mission to Observe Local Elections in Ukraine

On October 23, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Tupytskyi held an online meeting with the Head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights' Local Election Observation Mission, Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir.

The parties discussed the main aspects of the local elections in Ukraine, to be held on October 25, and how the election campaign is going.

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine greeted the guests and thanked the interlocutors for their constant attention to Ukraine. According to him, the current election campaign is going through a somewhat tense pandemic, but he expressed hope that the elections will be fair and transparent, respecting all the rights of participants in the election process and meet international standards for democratic elections.

The Head of Mission stressed the importance of international election observation and spoke about the work of the mission. Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir noted that Mission includes 16 experts based in Kyiv, as well as 66 long-term observers deployed in international groups throughout the country.

The observers will closely monitor key aspects of the election and keep the public and the media informed. During its work, the mission will publish a preliminary report and inform the public and the media about the election observation process. At the end of the election process, the mission will provide an assessment and a final report.

During the meeting, the Court’s Chairman stressed that the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is not a subject of the election process, but considers issues related to political rights, in particular, suffrage.

According to him, since 1998, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine has adopted about 20 decisions and provided 2 opinions on issues related to the election process.

During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed other topical issues and expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation.

The event was attended by Head of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Viktor Beschastnyi, legal analyst of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Election Observation Mission in Ukraine Elena Kovalyova and political analyst of the Mission Dimash Alzhanov.
