Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Petro Filiuk, emphasised the significance of the Constitution during an immersive public dialogue entitled “The Constitution of Ukraine: The Path to Freedom”, held to mark the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine.

In his speech, the judge highlighted the special significance of Ukraine’s Constitution Day for every Ukrainian and emphasised that it is the only public holiday directly enshrined in the Constitution (Article 161). Petro Filiuk noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s Constitution. “Thirty years spans an entire generation of Ukrainians who have grown up guided by the values enshrined in the current Constitution,” he added.

The judge remarked that a fitting commemoration of this date entails respect for all those involved in the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine, as well as an awareness of the responsibility to uphold its principles. He also emphasised that the best Constitution is one that is known, respected and adhered to.

The event, held at the invitation of Acting Governor of the Volyn Regional State Administration Roman Romaniuk, brought together representatives of state authorities, the national and international judiciary, the legal and academic communities, and the expert community. The expert discussion was joined by First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko; Minister for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine Natalia Kalmykova; representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine’s Commissioner for Human Rights within the judicial system on matters relating to the right to a fair trial and representation before the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Andrii Ovsienko; as well as judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia Paavo Randma, and judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Tallinn Court of Appeal of the Republic of Estonia Pavlo Goncharov.
