Delegation of the Venice Commission visited the Constitutional Court of Ukraine

 

On October 25, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Tupytskyi, Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Serhiy Holovaty and judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Vasyl Lemak and Oleh Pervomaiskyi held a meeting with the delegation of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission).

First Vice-President of the Venice Commission Herdis Kjerulf-Thorgeirsdottir (Iceland), Vice-President of the Venice Commission Veronika Bílková (Czech Republic), representative of the Secretariat of the Commission Mesut Bedirhanoglu (Turkish Republic), as well as the Head of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Vasylkevych participated in the meeting.

The purpose of the visit of the delegation of the Venice Commission to Ukraine was to study aspects of the implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State One” in connection with the preparation of an opinion on this Law by international experts. Upon the request of the President of the Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on monitoring the draft opinion has been included in the agenda for the December plenary meeting.

The Venice Commission experts were interested in issues related to the peculiarities of constitutional proceedings and the procedure for declaring acts or their individual provisions unconstitutional.

The delegation of the Venice Commission stressed the importance of the legal position of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in the case on the conformity of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State One” with the Constitution of Ukraine (constitutionality).
