Delegation of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine took part in the International Conference "Constitutional Justice in Transitional Democracies: Success and Challenges of Constitutional Review in Georgia and Eastern Europe"
Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Yurii Baulin and judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Mykhailo Hultai, Ihor Slidenko and Stanislav Shevchuk took part in the International Conference "Constitutional Justice in Transitional Democracies: Success and Challenges of Constitutional Review in Georgia and Eastern Europe", held on September 9-12 in Batumi (Georgia) on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of Georgia.
The event was attended by the chairpersons and judges of the bodies of constitutional jurisdiction of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovenia, Ukraine, judges of the European Court of Human Rights, representatives of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the authorities and the judiciary of Georgia, academia, NGOs, diplomatic missions in Georgia.
The participants were welcomed by the President of Georgia George Margvelashvili who stressed on the special role of constitutional courts in ensuring democracy, stability and integrity. He expressed support for the judges of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, and pointed out that in recent months there was considerable public political pressure and unwarranted interference in their activity that threatened the independence of the judiciary.
The President thanked the four judges, whose term of office had been terminated, for 10 years of their fruitful activity and introduced two newly appointed judges of the Constitutional Court of Georgia Irina Imerlishvili and George Kverenchkhiladze.
Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia David Usupashvili and President of the Constitutional Court of Georgia George Papuashvili welcomed the guests and wished fruitful activity to the conference participants.
Welcoming the participants of the forum Vice-President of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe Ms Herdis Kjerulf Thorgeirsdottir noted that the unequivocal position of the Venice Commission is that judges should be independent in their activities, as the Constitutional Court is the highest court of the country and is the guarantor of human rights and protection of the Constitution of Georgia and its citizens.

Professor, Full Member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine Yurii Baulin delivered a report on "The Challenges of Constitutional Review in the Democratic Transformation of Society and the State (the Experience of Ukraine)."
The event was supported by the EU project "Support to the Constitutional Court", the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
